Why Saying “No” to Work is Good For Your Business

So 2021 is here, and it might be feeling like a repeat of 2020 so far! Let's talk about one small change you can make in your business to make this year better than the last: say no to work more often.

Yes, read that right! Let me tell you about why saying “no” to work more often will actually improve your business this year. Don't worry, this one's a quick read and it'll be worth it, promise!

  1. The more projects/clients you take on that aren't a good fit for you, or that you don't really enjoy doing, the less opportunities you'll have to say “YES!” to all the RIGHT projects/clients. If you get enough inquiries that you aren't really struggling to find work, then you should absolutely be prioritizing which projects you take on. Don't you want to spend time working on projects that you actually LOVE, if you're going to be working anyway?

  2. Photographers, you'll always book more sessions like the ones you post on social media. So, if you end up taking on a lot of sessions that you don't really love doing, and posting them because you have nothing else to share, I can promise that you'll get stuck in a rut of booking MORE of those undesirable sessions. Always always always share on social media what you want to book MORE of, not less of!

  3. Burn out is real ya'll, and the money isn't always worth it. Do I even need to explain more here? I'll just say this: your mental health and work-life balance is worth SO MUCH MORE than a few jobs.

  4. We all know that the more we enjoy doing something, then we'll naturally be better at it just because we enjoy it. If you spend all of your time shooting the kind of sessions that you really love, then your work will improve faster, your business will grow faster, and your clients will be raving about you, all because you simply LOVE doing it.

So this year, give yourself permission to say “No” to all the projects/clients that you don’t really vibe with. Do it without shame, and never feel guilty for building the life and business of your dreams.
