The 4 Best Camera Straps for Photographers

After 10+ years in the photography industry, shooting everything from senior portraits to landscapes to football games, I’ve learned how important having the right camera strap set-up is when you’re spending hours behind the camera. Along the way I’ve tried just about every type of strap out there, and linked below are 4 of the best strap options that you can’t go wrong with. Each link is an affiliate link, which means every purchase is also supporting a small business owner.

First is the hip spider holster. Unlike traditional straps, this belt-mounted camera holster takes weight off your neck and shoulders. Its self-locking mechanism and quick-draw design make it particularly useful for wedding, event, and outdoor photographers who need their cameras within easy reach, but want to protect their back during long hours of shooting. The downside to this holster design is you are detaching the camera each time you use it, so there is no drop protection while you’re using it.

Next is the dual camera harness. This was my personal favorite for shooting sports games because I could quickly switch back and forth between two cameras with two different lenses, but also put both down to free my hands quickly without worrying about dropping anything.

Next, we have the most underrated camera strap in my opinion: the hand strap. This was a permanent fixture on my camera during the many years of photographing senior portraits full time. The hand strap is simple and never got in the way, but offered the perfect amount of security for shooting portraits. It can also be combined with the other cross body strap or dual camera harness.

Lastly, we have the cross body strap. This is the perfect, most simple upgrade from the standard neck strap that all new cameras come with. crossbody strap combines convenience with comfort. Its adjustable shoulder design keeps your camera accessible without requiring you to carry it around your neck, which makes it a practical choice for photographers who spend long days traveling and exploring with a camera.
